Students take a pre-test the first day of every week and I send it home with them that day.  They should be using the pre-test as a study guide for the week.  Please ask them to see their pre-test.  Look for spelling pattern mistakes to make them more efficient at studying. For example you may notice that your child always misses words with an “I before e” pattern, or words with double consonant patterns.  It is better to learn spelling rules and patterns then to just memorize words, though some words are just memorization.  Also look for the pattern that the book and the packet focuses on.

Reading Log:  Students reading logs are due every Friday morning.  The students are to read an average of 120-150 minutes per week.  They then start a new log Friday after school.

    • Calling all Volunteers: I am looking for some parents, grandparents, aunts uncles etc to help some students with math facts and reading around 3:10 -3:30 a couple days a week. Details will be worked out with individual volunteers.  This would be a great way to get some kids small group intense instruction. Please e-mail me if you are interested. (Heather_Jackson@dpsk12.org) THANKS!!

    • There will be a unit 1 Spelling test this Friday.  After this week students will start to have different lists depending on how they do during Monday's Pre-test.  If students are studying the words from the book then they will do homework pages from the book.  If students are studying words from a copy then their spelling homework will be copied pages and/or pages from the book.
    • This could change weekly depending on Monday's pretest. Some weeks your child may be studying words from the book and sometimes they might be studying words from the copied list.
    • There is typically not  spelling or literacy homework over the weekend

Reading logs: will be checked every Friday, students have a form to turn into me every Friday.  Students need to read 120-150 minutes minimum per week.  They have from Friday to Friday to complete their reading.
