8月3日 RaftingThe Southmoor moose in front of a rapid in the Grand Canyon. I was able to spend about five weeks on the river rafting this summer. Some of the trips I worked for Holiday River Expeditions in Utah as a guide. Other trips I was with friends and my husband.
All of the trips I did were on the Colorado Plateau. (We learned about the plateau last year) The first trip was on the Green River in Desolation Canyon. My second and third trips were on the Green River in Lododre Canyon and Dinosaur National Monument. My last trip was on the Colroado River in the Grand Canyon. This was my first trip ever in the Grand Canyon. The trip down the Grand Canyon was definitely the highlight of my summer.
Below in the photo gallery I have some photos and maps of my trips.
Brazil
Brazil is a huge country in South America. The countries official language is Portuguese. On the first half of the trip we spent most of our time in Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is huge; it has around 10 million people. It is the largest city on the continent of South America. Sao Paulo is a very interesting city with lots of art, culture and great food. Sao Paulo has the largest Japanese population anywhere else except Japan. It also has large German, Chinese and Italian populations. All of this mix of cultures gives Sao Paulo an international feeling and great food.
The second half of the trip was by far my favorite. We left the city and headed to a huge wetlands area about the size of France. The wetlands area is called the Pantanal and has an immense variety of plants and animals. We spent most of our time outdoors exploring this amazing area. Thanks to our excellent guides we saw tons of birds, reptiles, fish and mammals. To see some of the photos I took go to the photo gallery at the bottom of the page.
To learn a little more about the Pantanal go to: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/wildworld/profiles/terrestrial/nt/nt0907.html http://www.amazondiscover.com/info/pantanal.html
Brazil is the country in green below. It is mostly South of the equator. Since it is South of the equator the sky has a lot of stars that cannot be seen from the United States. The most famous constellation in the Southern hemisphere is the Southern Cross. Once we left the city we were able to look at the stars every night. To see a sky map of the constillations in the Southern hemisphere go to: http://www.skymaps.com/skymaps/tesms0808.pdf
You will have to zoom in a bit to read the words better and to find the Southern Cross.
